Defining Romanticization
Tw/Cw: mentions of trauma, suicide, eating disorders, and abuse.Romanticization: Romancing is making the bad of a situation or illness seem beautiful or attractive. Glorify the negative aspects in a positive way, or by ignoring them.Example 1: "Trauma made you strong" is often said to those who have suffered abuse or survived a difficult situation.Why (based on feedback):You don't need trauma to be strong, trauma didn't make you strong either, it shouldn't have happened. This also indirectly praised an abuser for his actions. Learning from an experience is something entirely different from the implication that one can become stronger "thanks" to it. Separate the journey of learning and healing from the traumatic experience.Example 2: "Pain makes you beautiful", a quote often heard in circles related to dangerous beauty trends/standards and eating disorders.Why (opinion-based):It is romanticization because it glorifies the final result over the mental/physical cost and decreases the bad habits that a person acquires.Fonts used:—Why do we romanticise mental illness on social media?—Euphoria vs. 13 Reasons Why: The Romanticization of Mental Anguish
Defining Fetishization
Tw/Cw: Mentions of suicide.Fetishization: Turn something into a sexual fetish.Fetish: An act in which sexual gratification is derived primarily from: a body part, an object, a situation, a disease, etc.Example 1: "I heard once... that when a train crashes, it can rip your clothes off... I guess pain is an aphrodisiac", quote from The Girl on the Train.Why (based on feedback):
It makes suicide look "sexy" and makes grieving sexual. The line is also used to increase the sexual tension in the film between two characters. This is fetishization.Fonts used:
